General Description of a Grid-Connected PV System
A grid-connected PV electrical power system, when properly designed and installed, will be capable of meeting the consumption power requirements of a television set, refrigerator, toaster, hair dryer, radio, washer and dryer, window air-conditioning unit, electrical lights, and other electrical appliances. Central air-conditioning with a 3-ton rating will require a PV system capable of generating additional electrical power close to 11 kW to meet the requirements of all these appliances. A grid-connected solar power system consists of light-weight solar panels, inverters with long life and high efficiency, heavy-duty mounting rails, mechanical support accessories, and electrical cables and wiring leading from the solar panel output to the electrical meter installed by the company. It is important to mention that solar panels or modules, mounting rails, and inverters are the high-ticket items. The remaining accessories and components for the grid-connected solar system would cost less than 10 percent of the total system cost.
